Roaming

What exactly is roaming? You may hear people refer to their cellular phone service as roaming in certain areas, but you may not be completely familiar as to what roaming really is. Roaming is when you are in an area that your provider does not have service. Your cellular service is provided by a series of cellular signal towers owned by your provider, or leased by your provider through another service. When you get into an area not covered by towers owned or leased by your provider, then your calls wind up going out on towers owned by other providers. When you make calls on another provider’s tower, they charge your provider for the use of their service. Your provider then passes this cost on to you as a roaming charge.

It used to be that roaming charges were high, and people would shut their phones off when the phone indicated that they were roaming. The problem was that some providers had much more extensive networks than other providers did, and this started to give an edge to the larger providers. People would decide that they would rather be with a Webdesign provider that had a large network and could help them avoid roaming fees, as opposed to a provider that would inflate their customer’s bills with excessive roaming fees.

To counter-act the negative effects for roaming fees were having on their business, some of the larger national providers have started to waive roaming fees for their customers. Now customers can use their phone anywhere in the country and only get charged for their regular minutes, as opposed to worrying about having to pay high roaming charges when they went outside their normal area.

Roaming charges still exist with smaller providers, and with the advent of the new 3G network. The new 3G technology is not widely available yet, and the providers of this new cellular technology are still working on reducing those damaging roaming charges.
